Hello, my name is Sonia and I am the owner of I Am Hair Wellness... I opened my salon on the 5th of June 1995, I was 23 years old. To be honest, the first few years were tough, working 7 days a week for less than what someone earnt on the dole, certainly wasn’t the dream I had in mind……. I still remember my first days taking were $104.50.
Passion and grit were my only allies and my naivety unwittingly gave me the courage. What you don’t know doesn’t hurt… right! I did everything they say not to do when opening a business. I had no business plan, no money in the bank (big mistake) and I trusted way too many, so called experts.
Fortunately, my attitude towards my mistakes, and the lessons they left me, made me a fast learner!
Today, I say my children and my mistakes are my greatest teachers. Over the course of my 30+ years in the hair industry I’ve won several awards, some of these include:

- Telstra Business Woman of the Year awards “Business Owner” category
- Northern Territory Training Awards “Trainer of the Year”
- IHS Northern Territory Hairdresser of the Year
- 3 x IHS Northern Territory Salon of the Year
I have also had the pleasure of teaching and working with some amazing and talented people. My apprentices have made me proud time and time again. To date, we have a Northern Territory Apprentice of the Year, 6 x Northern Territory Worldskills Gold Medallist winners and Most Outstanding Student to name a few.
Over the past years, I have diversified my skills to include “Trichology” (the medical practice and study of hair health, hair loss and scalp disorders) and Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP - a cosmetic solution to hair loss, used to densify fine thinning hair, camouflage scarring on the scalp and to re-establish your natural hair line). Most recently, gaining my certificate as a Density Extensionist (a hair extension system designed to densify the very finest, thinning hair using singular strands unlike traditional hair extensions)
The launch of our Trichology Clinic is the most recent addition to our salon and is something very close to my heart. This total commitment to hair wellness is our foundation. I love what I do!!!
